We were originally going to make a "mosaic" picture using pre-cut sticky-backed foam craft squares, when I thought Kane was going to be 5 when we reached this point. Due to Covid, he is actually nearly 7, so we upgraded to baker Ross mosaic tiles/grouting and tried to mosaic the top of a small wooden side table which used to be the base of his high-chair - it conveniently has a raised lip of the approximate thickness of the tiles around the central tabletop, allowing for mosaic infill and then sheet of cut-to-size perspex (from sheetplastics.com) to be screwed over the top at the end to get back to a useably smooth surface.
We also tried the pre-made "Roman mosaic" craft kits from Baker Ross but despite having lovely pictures of Roman life these are actually much less educational than plain squares, as they just involve sticking intermittent tiny pieces onto a pre-printed coloured picture to match the background of that area, rather than creating "pixel art" from scratch. These are a useful sort of thing to have with you on a train, but not especially fun or educational on their own.
